Rock Bands at TMS

Play Real Music in a Real Band

The TMS Rock Bands program gives students in grades 4–12 the opportunity to rehearse, perform, and collaborate in a band setting led by professional musicians.

Students learn teamwork, musicianship, and stagecraft through weekly rehearsals and multiple performances each year.

How It Works

Rock Bands rehearse on Tuesday evenings, and band enrollment is for the entire school year, September through May. Bands are grouped by age and experience:

  • Grades 4 and up: Beginning ensemble experience

  • Grades 6–12: Intermediate to advanced bands

All prospective rock band students participate in an audition the Tuesday following Labor Day. Auditions help us form well-balanced bands and place students in the best group for their instrument, experience, and interests. Students are expected to prepare specific audition materials in advance and demonstrate defined musical skills. Some positions, particularly drums, are limited by the number of bands we can create each year.

Detailed audition requirements and preparation materials are updated annually by August 15. Please check back here for the most current information.

Students who are still building foundational skills may be directed to Rock Band Prep (Grades 3-5) or a new Band Lab offering (Grades 6-12, expected Fall 2025), programs designed to strengthen individual skills before joining a full band.

Confidence

Build self-assurance through rehearsal, risk-taking, and public performance

Responsibility

Show up prepared, on time, and ready to support your bandmates

Creativity
