Wyoming Arts Council Features Uke 55+ for Creative Adults

Sep 9, 2022

For two decades, veteran instructor Susan Jones has taught multigenerational music sessions, fostering a vibrant community through the power of music. With her wealth of experience, Susan crafted an innovative 8-week ukulele course specifically tailored for adults aged 55 and above. This initiative not only aims to impart musical skills but also to cultivate connections and camaraderie among participants. Susan's reputation precedes her; she is esteemed for her flexible teaching approach, adeptly catering to the diverse needs of individuals within a single classroom setting.

In recent years, there has been a burgeoning interest in understanding the profound benefits of music education and engagement, particularly for seniors. Research has underscored the positive impact that learning and playing music can have on cognitive function, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life among older adults. Studies have shown that musical activities stimulate various regions of the brain, enhancing memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills [1]. Moreover, music has been found to alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression, promoting mental health resilience in later life stages [2].

Recognizing the invaluable role of the arts in promoting healthy aging, the Wyoming Arts Council has championed Creative Aging initiatives statewide. These programs, including Susan Jones' ukulele course at Teton Music School, serve as dynamic platforms for older adults to explore their musical talents, forge meaningful connections, and embark on a journey of lifelong learning. With its welcoming atmosphere and expert guidance, Teton Music School is not just a place to learn music; it's a vibrant community hub where individuals of all ages can discover the transformative power of music in their lives.
